Four Pillars of Retirement – Purpose

Picture your first day of retirement. You wake up to no alarm, no morning commute, and no eight-hour grind at the office. It’s the first day of your “permanent vacation,” and you can spend your time exactly how you want. This is an exciting time meant to be enjoyed to its fullest potential! But without one thing, your golden years may begin to drag and make it seem like your better years are behind you: purpose.

Finding purpose in retirement will look different for everyone, but it is one of the most crucial aspects of a fulfilling and enjoyable retirement. We believe the most important aspects of finding and maintaining purpose include giving, growing, and enjoying.

Finding ways to contribute and give back to your community and applying your knowledge and experience to making a difference in the lives of the people around you can enrich the time you spend in retirement. A great way to add giving to your retirement is by volunteering around town! What are some causes you believe in? Could your local library use an extra shelf-stocker? Perhaps there’s an after-school program at your grandchild’s school you could help lead? Volunteering in the community you know and love can connect you with like-minded individuals, boost your confidence, keep your mind sharp, and even promote a longer lifespan!

When looking to add growth to your retirement, try asking yourself the following things: What have you been waiting to have the time to do? Is there an instrument you’ve always wanted to play? A craft you’ve thought about mastering? A travel destination that’s been on your bucket list for years? There is no better time to push yourself to learn and try new things than retirement. After leaving the workplace behind, you’ll likely find yourself with the most free time on your hands than you’ve had in a while, so this is the perfect opportunity to grow your experience and skillset!

Perhaps the most important part of your purpose in retirement is enjoyment. Retirement is the phase of life where you’re meant to slow down and spend your time how you want to. True enjoyment can come from anything and will be different for every retiree. You can pick up some of your old hobbies that you enjoyed as a kid, go on a lavish vacation abroad, or simply enjoy each day that you spend with your loved ones.

The transition into retirement coming straight out of a full-length career can be jarring, but with a strong sense of purpose to guide and motivate you, you’ll likely have a very full and meaningful retirement.
